What can stop you from riding electric bikes? Concern for personal safety? Not physically able? Weather conditions? Well, different people have various reasons. But do these really matter? A research conducted by Portland State University may give you the answer. In their study, 1720 people from different ages, genders answered the questionnaire survey.
Difficult Storing or Securing My Electric Bikes "
On the one hand, for people who live in houses, this statement should not cause any concern to them. Personal garage makes everything go well. On the other hand, for the people who live in apartments, it probably causes trouble to them especially for those apartments which have no elevators. But surprisingly, less than 4% of respondents say that they have this kind of trouble.
"Other People Relied on Me to Take My Car (Coworkers, Family Members)"
Honestly, it is true. Unlike vehicles, an electric bike can afford a maximum of 2 persons including riders and in the majority of time, these situations are unavoidable: Children need to go to school in the morning; cannot refuse to give coworkers favors. But according to data, this concern only counts for 6%.
"Biking Was Too Slow For Me "
A little bit similar to the former barrier. In the US, depending on which state you are in, electric bikes regulate speed up from 20-28 miles per hour which are much slower than vehicles. However, the positioning of the two products is different, and the functions are not the same. Vehicles are not going away, and neither are ebikes. Around 32% of respondents indicate that they worry about this problem.
"Distances To Places I Want To Go Are Too Far"
Even electric vehicles, their endurance is at least 200miles. Limited by the size of the ebike, the number and capacity of the battery, ebike’s range is normally from 20 to 60miles. You may not ride with an ebike from LA to NY but with a vehicle, it is possible. This concern represents more than 50% of the respondents.
Back to the question: But do these really matter? Yes, in the absence of policies and infrastructures, electric bikes are still limited in some circumstances. But a new question comes out: Are the advantages of ebike greater than its shortages? Please follow our next episode.
