The 3 Ebike Routes Nobody Tells You About Oakland, California

Oakland does not come to mind as a prime travel destination. It does not have the postcard perfect beauty and appeal as other locations in San Francisco Bay Area. However, I think it would be unfair to dismiss Oakland from your travel plans completely. Oakland is a giant city, an urban cultural mecca that stretches from the coast to redwood-covered rolling hills. It has a deep, complicated history and culture, its own local slang, absolutely incredible food, and plenty to see and do –I will tell  you 4 Electric Bikes routes covered in detail.

Route 1#- Bay Trail: Oakland to Albany
The bay trail is a 24.6 kilometer point-to-point trail located near Oakland that offers scenic views. This trail is a segment of the San Francisco Bay Trail: a 500 mile long mile trail around the Bay and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, running, and road biking and is accessible year-round.

This is the 12th section of the Bay Trail, taking hikers from Oakland to Albany. The Bay Trail follows streets through the busy trade and transportation zone of the Port of Oakland. Along 3rd Street, the fat tire ebike lanes and sidewalks curve under the web of highway overpasses to Mandela Parkway.

The Bay Trail follows streets through the busy trade and transportation zone of the Port of Oakland. Along 3rd Street, the mountain ebikes lanes and sidewalks curve under the web of highway overpasses to Mandela Parkway. At 8th Street and Mandela, the trail splits. One leg heads towards the heart of the Port to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park and Portview Park. Breathtaking views of the Bay Bridge and the San Francisco and Oakland skylines can be seen from almost everywhere in these parks with the observation tower at Middle Harbor offering the most spectacular birds-eye views. At 7th Street, take the path along Maritime Street north through a busy port area to the Bay Bridge Trail. From 8th Street and Mandela, the trail route heads north along Mandela Parkway to Emeryville. Follow Mandela through the industrial zone of West Oakland, stopping to visit Cypress Memorial Park built in memory to those who lost their lives here in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Mandela terminates at a shopping center; head left on Horton and left again on 40th Street to ramp over the railroad tracks. Where 40th Street turns into Shellmound Street, look for another entry to the Bay Bridge Trail to Yerba Buena Island.

A future park, known as Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline, will be constructed at the base of the Bay Bridge serving as an entry point to the path on the bridge. Continuing through Emeryville, use city streets to reach Christie Avenue, then take the trail along Christie Avenue and Powell Street and pass under the highway. Continue straight on Powell towards the bay to reach the Emeryville City Marina or turn right to follow the Bay Trail north towards Albany. This is the southern edge of Eastshore State Park. The trail passes Point Emery on its way to Berkeley, where it ducks under the Berkeley bicycle/pedestrian bridge over Highway 80. Take the bridge inland to visit Aquatic Park. Detour west along University Avenue to the Berkeley Marina, Shorebird Park, and Cesar Chavez Park. Rounding the edge of Golden Gate Fields, the Albany Mudflats Ecological Reserve is straight ahead. To your left is Albany Bulb, popular for its spectacular views of the bay and found art exhibits. The Bay Trail continues north squeezing between the highway and the mudflats en route to Richmond.

At the boathouse, paddleboats can be rented hourly and daily for the whole family. The lake is a great place for picnics and gathering as there are many shady and sunny spots to relax.

Route 3#
Piedmont Park Loop is a 1.3 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near Piedmont, California that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

An easy paved trail through a canyon in the middle of Piedmont. There is a beautiful stream with a half dozen little waterfalls through it. It is also an off-leash area for dogs. It's especially nice for that since there's not much poison oak in this park. Strollers and bikes aren't a good choice with all the steep stairs. The park above is beautiful and manicured, but the canyon trail is left more natural and is entirely covered from direct light by huge trees. Great for a quick scenic walk.
