The best way to get around Jacksonville is by car. The greater Jacksonville area encompasses 840 square miles, and the nearby beach towns of Amelia Island, Ponte Vedra Beach and Atlantic Beach are roughly 30 miles away from the downtown area. You'll find several big-name car rental agencies located in the Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), which sits roughly 15 miles north of the downtown area. However, if you aren't a fan of heavy highway traffic, you can rely on bike or ebike (What if you don't like pedaling all the time?) to get around.
Jacksonville has some of the most scenic biking trails in the state. The trails range from easy to Man riding a electric bike on a trail difficult and run through a diverse landscape with breathtaking panoramic views. Here you can ride on paved trails in the shade under the tree canopy, over bridges, or on the sand down a stretch of beach and appreciate the picturesque scenery.
Route 1#- Ed Austin Regional Park Loop
Ed Austin Regional Park Loop is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Jacksonville, Florida that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, running, and biking and is accessible year-round. Dogs can also use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
This paved loop of the city park runs around the perimeter of the area and showcases the park's many great amenities. There are a couple of scenic ponds, a disc golf course, basketball courts, baseball fields, and recreational fields for the family to enjoy. There is no shade along this trail so sun protection is recommended.
There are 5 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of Monument Road at the east end of the trailhead. All of them are accessible to vans with striped access aisles. The trail surface is paved and smooth asphalt. It is usually at least 6 feet wide. The entire trail is estimated to be in the mild grade category (3% or less).
Route 2#- Jacksonville Treaty Oak Walk
Jacksonville Treaty Oak Walk is a 0.1 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Jacksonville, Florida that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking.
This is a short trail around a sprawling live oak tree that is great fun to photograph and explore. The tree's name derives from a rumor that conservationists spread when the property was threatened with real estate development: they said the tree was actually the site of a historic treaty with local Native Americans! Conservation efforts were successful and the tree remains strong and tall today.
There are 2 designated accessible parking spots at the trailhead. Alternative street parking, both accessible and non-accessible, is limited.
Route 3#- Bayard Conservation Area Loop
Bayard Conservation Area Loop is a 10.5 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Green Cove Springs, Florida that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs and horses can also use this trail.
This is a 10 mile loop trail that can be made longer or shorter based on user experience. The trail winds through important conservation areas near the St. Johns River and the greater Jacksonville area.
The area provides key flood storage and preservation of water and natural resources for the Lower St. Johns River watershed. Along the trail, users will enjoy riparian lowland hardwoods and pines.
Route 4#- Evan's Long Loop
Evan's Long Loop is a 18.5 mile loop trail located near Middleburg, Florida that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, camping, horses, and backpacking. Dogs can also use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
This is one of the longest trails located in Jennings State Forest. The route follows the yellow markers and connects to several different trails in the park. Users report that the route is not very well marked and suggest downloading the route beforehand to navigate. This trail is intended to be multi-use and is shared by horseback riders and hikers.
